Lady Barons Lose Heartbreaker to WJ, 14-12

The Lady Barons brought their balanced attack and improving ball handling to the new turf field at Walter Johnson, and played well before falling 14-12.

As they do in some games, the Barons started slowly, falling behind early and then slowly working their way back. Walter Johnson has one very good player, who bulled her way to the net for 10 goals, but the Barons were unable to take advantage of the fact that she has no left hand and is no threat to pass. WJ has played well against good teams, barely losing to Wooton and beating up on Blair, but the Barons do not realize how far they have come this season – they should not have lost this game. To their credit, the Barons hung in there – Amy Miller (1 goal 1 assist) has become a full-fledged star using her quickness and skill to jump on loose balls and run through defenders like they are standing still. Caitlin McCarty (2 assists), Kinsey Hoffman (1 goal 1 assist) and Stephanie Mertens (1 goal) are very able to control the middle of the field and fuel the offense. Maggie Mitchell (5 goals, 2 assists, 5 ground balls) is a fine shooter and her 62 goals this season are likely to draw post-season attention. But the key to the Barons this season is the way they have come along as a team. Goaltender Gwyneth Arbury turned away several penalty shots when the team needed help; defenders Amy Altman, Kinsey Hoffman and Danielle Harkaway took on WJ’s best offensive players and stripped the ball repeatedly, supported by Rebecca Natoli and Elizabeth Ward. Rachel Keeling, Laura O’Brien and Josie Silva Lopes (1 goal) appear regularly on the score sheet and do the hard work of backing up shots, causing turnovers while redefending, and getting the ball inside. But it all boiled down to the fact that the one WJ player was able to drive to net without being forced to draw a charge and that made the difference in the game. At crunch time, with time running down, Sunny Cobb scored two goals to draw the Barons within 1, but give credit where it is due, each time WJ was able to secure the face off and extend the lead back to two.
